About

Flash Studios was established in 2000 by photographer Melanie Jenkins. and studio manager/set builder Mike Small.

Specialising in food, interiors, product, fashion, beauty and jewellery, the Flash team are always looking for the next challenge and exciting brief, and work together to produce outstanding qualities in all areas.

Melanie Jenkins (Mel) | Photographer and Director

Melanie started her photography career the traditional way by studying photography at tertiary level at Unitec, shooting film and printing her own Black and white images, before going on to assist commercial photographers. Establishing Flash Studios in 2000, Melanie began working as a freelance photographer for creatives in the magazine industry before breaking into the advertising agencies and design studios.

“I’ve been living my dream for the past 23 years. Photography is in my life every day,
and is my creative output”

Shooting food, interiors, jewellery, products, and fashion mainly in studio, on medium and large format digital cameras to achieve the finest of details.

“With most of my work shot on a Phase one Trichromatic medium format camera, I still love the smell and feel of my Sinar P2 4×5 camera which I occasionally get out to shoot with”

With a passion for creating carefully lit and crafted images for the advertising and magazine industry, Melanie is also emerging as a fine art photographer exhibiting with Womens work for international womens day 2020-2023, Panuku project 2022, and has work featuring in the upcoming Julia Margaret Cameron awards at the Fotonostrum gallery in Barcelona 2023.

Mike Small | Studio Manager, Set Builder, Shoot Assistant

Mike Small joined the Flash team in 2022 and brings with him a wealth of knowledge about camera and lighting through to building and maintenance. Previously selling Mel her first digital camera and lighting equipment back in 2000, Mike has finally joined the team himself.

He is enjoying working with the equipment in a creative setting rather than from a selling point of view. Mike will take your set build vision and work out a way to build it in studio. His excellent painting and wallpapering skills have proven invaluable, and he also makes a great cuppa.
